LEARNING PATH
Setting the Scene: Each chapter of the MindTap begins with a brief, visually compelling video that uses a historical event to introduce students to some of the chapter’s major themes and encourages students to think critically about the subject matter. There are several focus questions in the video and there is an option to answer two end-of-video questions in the assessment that follows.
A set of learning objectives opens the Chapter Introduction reading; each learning objective links to the related section of reading allowing for easy study and review.
Review Activities: Each chapter includes reading comprehension assignments designed to cover the content of each major heading within the chapter.
Chapter Test: Each chapter within MindTap ends with a summative Chapter Test. It is built using Aplia critical thinking questions. Aplia provides automatically graded critical thinking assignments with detailed, immediate explanations on every question. Students can also choose to see another set of related questions if they did not earn all available points in their first attempt and want more practice.
Reflection Activity: Every chapter ends with an assignable, gradable reflection activity, intended as a brief writing assignment through which students can apply the ideas and themes they’ve just studied. These activities have a Global Perspectives focus to help students make global connections as they learn about the history of western civilization.
Reading Activities: Each chapter’s reading is manageable because it is organized into shorter sections with each section aligned with a learning objective. Additionally, students will discover visually compelling resources such as relevant Google links that allow students to further explore historically significant places, culture, and artwork; interactive maps to help student students better understand geography, change over time, and historical events; and videos. Finally, each History & Film feature within the reading is now accompanied by a YouTube playlist of additional video clips relating to the featured movie and related topics.
Unit Activities: Chapters in MindTap are organized into multi-chapter units. Each unit includes a brief set of higher-stakes activities for instructors to assign, designed to assess students on their writing and critical thinking skills, and their ability to engage larger themes, concepts, and material across multiple chapters.
Classroom Activities: MindTap includes a brief list of in-class activity ideas for instructors. These are designed to increase student collaboration, engagement, and understanding of selected topics or themes. These activities, including class debate scenarios and primary source discussion guides, can enrich the classroom experience for both instructors and students.
