Overview

Tunks' "An Invitation to Health" empowers students to pursue a healthier lifestyle -- physically, emotionally, socially and sexually. This edition offers updated, evidence-based coverage on a range of topics, including the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the connection between happiness and health, holistic approaches to managing anxiety and strategies for navigating social media. It also addresses current dietary guidelines, immunization, safer sex practices, recognizing harmful trends in diet and fitness and the risks of vaping. New features guide students to become informed health consumers and curate online content focused on proven wellness practices. With active learning tools like tips for healthy living on a budget, preventive care strategies and practical steps for sustainable change, the text equips students to make meaningful improvements to their well-being.

  • MEDICAL MARIJUANA: A new section on medical marijuana ensures that students receive accurate, evidence-based information about its uses, benefits and risks within a medical context. It reflects current medical practices and legal developments, helping students understand a topic that is increasingly relevant in healthcare. Covering medical marijuana also supports informed decision-making and encourages respectful, science-informed discussions.
  • MISCONCEPTIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA: Mis-Influenced expands on the prior edition’s Consumer Alert to take a critical look at common misconceptions and how information spreads through social media. The current student focus on social media as an information source is addressed, and we have made a concerted effort to address the impact of social media. The information-driven focus helps students learn how to identify advertisements and poor choices and recognize trends that are proven to be scams.
  • HEALTHY BEHAVIORS & IMPACTFUL OUTCOMES: Your Strategies for Success is now titled Healthy Pathways and continues to focus on healthful strategies that students can practice today to help create a life-long pattern of healthy behaviors throughout their lifespan. What Did You Decide is renamed and, in some places, restructured to focus on learning and outcomes. It is now titled What Did you Learn? to help instructors shift the ownership of new concepts and ideas back to the students.
  • REORGANIZED CONTENT AND UPDATES ON CURRENT TOPICS: Coverage on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic includes the latest information on viruses, vaccines and other pandemic-related topics such as the effects of isolation, healthcare disparities, the impact on physical, social and intellectual health, adolescent and young teen brain development and the impact of social media and COVID-19. Information is included on racial disparities and mental health, self-harm, the Suicide Prevention Hotline and reaching out when in distress. Consumer Health is now a continuing theme throughout the text.
  • AGING AND DEATH LITERACY: New information is added about the impact of nutrition on aging and updated clinical information regarding supplements and menopause, including 10 early signs that may indicate Alzheimer’s. Current statistics about death rates related to COVID-19 and how to interpret the CDC’s information regarding pandemic deaths are included, and a new segment takes a comprehensive look at death literacy across populations.
  • ECOLOGICAL IMPACT: Going Green examines the ecological impact of various heath-related topics and helps students see ways they can live greener and cleaner lives. Data is updated on global temperature changes and the impact this will have on people of all ages. Useful information about harmful BPA products and the FDA’s stance on their use in consumer products is now featured.
  • INCLUSIVITY: Focusing on inclusivity, Definitions of Health Promotion are expanded with new focus on Healthy People 2030 (with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ health related issues). The text strives to be inclusive as it features diverse perspectives, experiences and identities, allowing students from various backgrounds to see themselves reflected in the content. By using accessible language and culturally relevant examples, it creates a welcoming learning environment where no student feels overlooked. This approach encourages engagement and fosters a sense of belonging in the classroom.
  • FINANCIAL HEALTH: The chapter "Financial and Occupational Wellness" provides students with tools to build a foundation in career and financial well-being. Explore how choosing a major aligns with long-term goals and values and how life satisfaction can be influenced by one's professional path. Real-world topics for young adults include credit scores, student loans, budgeting, saving, investing and protecting financial information. Students develop healthy, mindful relationship with money that will serve them throughout their lives.
