Prealgebra 6th Edition by Alan S. Tussy/Diane Koenig

Overview

Offering a uniquely modern, balanced approach, Tussy/Koenig's PREALGEBRA, 6th Edition, integrates the best of traditional and conceptual approaches with a new Look Alikes enhancement. Look Alikes help students compare and contrast problem types to understand the correct intent of questions and determine the necessary steps for solution. For many students, algebra is like a foreign language. Some students need instructional support translating Mathematical words, meanings, and how they apply to problem solving. Emphasizing the "language of algebra," the text's fully integrated learning process expands student reasoning abilities and teaches them how to read, write, and think mathematically. It blends instructional approaches that include vocabulary, practice, and well-defined pedagogy with an emphasis on reasoning, modeling, communication, and technology skills.

Instructors and students benefit from WebAssign content updates without having to transition to a new edition, including new problem types such as Responsive Questions, Concept Checks, Learn Its, an increased number of problems and more.

Alan S. Tussy

Alan Tussy received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Redlands and a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from California State University, Los Angeles. He has taught across a variety of course and curriculum areas from pre-algebra to differential equations at Arcadia High School and Citrus Community College in Glendora, CA. He has authored best-selling paperback and hardcover developmental mathematic series now in their 6th editions published by Cengage. An extraordinary author, he is dedicated to his students' success and is a relentlessly meticulous and creative visionary who maintains a keen focus on the greatest challenges students of today face in mathematics. He is a well-received conference speaker and has recently focused on mentoring and counseling the next generation of mathematics instructors.

Diane Koenig

A nationally recognized educator and author, Diane Koenig actively shaped several textbooks, ancillaries and series. Since 1982 when she helped develop the Gustafson/Frisk series to her work on the Tussy/Koenig/Gustafson series, Diane’s writing continues to reflect the expertise she gains from working with students in her Mathematics courses. Throughout her work, she integrates research-based strategies in Mathematics education. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Math Education from Illinois State University in 1980, and began her career at Rock Valley College in 1981, when she became the Math Supervisor for a newly formed Personalized Learning Center. Earning her Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics from Northern Illinois University in 1984, Diane, enjoys the distinction of being the first woman to become a full-time faculty member in the Mathematics department for Rock Valley College. In addition to being awarded AMATYC's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015, she was chosen as the Rock Valley College Faculty of the Year by her peers in 2005, and the next year she was awarded the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award and the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges Award for Teaching Excellence. In addition to her teaching, she is an active member of the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges (IMACC), serving on the board of directors, on a state-level task force rewriting the course outlines for the Developmental Mathematics courses, and as the Association's newsletter editor.
  • JUST IN TIME SUPPORT built into questions contains direct links to the eTextbook (Read It) and videos (Watch It).
  • LEARN IT MODULES address your students’ knowledge gaps with just-in-time instruction that meets their diverse learning styles. Available as an additional resource within questions, Learn Its provide targeted instruction and practice on that topic using narrative, videos and tutorials—all in one place. If the topic is still too challenging, students can choose to continue learning through associated prerequisite Learn Its until they feel confident in their knowledge and preparedness.
  • RESPONSIVE QUESTIONS personalize the learning experience for your students by asking them to use their own real data, which provides the variables they will use to answer each question part.
  • CONCEPT CHECK questions provide students with short, multi-step videos reviewing key math concepts. Students are required to answer a question after each video to ensure their understanding of each concept.
  • EXPANDED PROBLEMS include intermediary steps to guide students to the final answer.
  • MASTER IT TUTORIALS break problems down into steps to help guide students through the mathematical process.
  • VIDEO EXAMPLES provide embedded videos paired with follow-up questions to ensure student understanding.
  • COURSE PACKS are modifiable, ready-to-use assignments built by subject matter experts to help save time.
  • CLASS INSIGHTS provide understanding of student knowledge gaps.
  • FROM CAMPUS TO CAREERS chapter openers highlight vocations requiring a variety of mathematics skills. The job outlook, educational requirements, and annual earnings data provide practical information to help students make career decisions.
  • STUDY SETS are enhanced with application problems that give students appropriate context for the topics they are studying and how they apply in a variety of occupations and vocations.
  • STRATEGY AND WHY explanations to the solution of each worked example provides a concise answer about why a particular approach is taken.
  • NOW TRY problems complete the final step in the learning process. They appear after each worked example and are linked to a similar problem found within the Guided Practice section of the Study Sets. PRACTICE PROBLEMS address every topic within each section and maintain a clear progression of level. The Practice section is divided into two categories: Guided Practice and Try It Yourself. Guided Practice takes each practice problem and keys it directly to the appropriate example in the section. Try It Yourself problems help students determine their own strategies when solving problems, just as they would when they take a test.
