Jane Rice

Jane Rice was Director of the Medical Assisting Program at Coosa Valley Technical College in Rome, Georgia for more than 30 years. During her tenure, she obtained AAMA accreditation for the program — the first in the state to do so — and served as an AMA/AAMA Program Evaluator and member of the AAMA Editorial Board. In addition to this text, she has published journal articles in The Professional Medical Assistant, and several other textbooks, including Medical Terminology for Health Care Professionals, Medical Terminology: A Word Building Approach, Medical Terminology with Human Anatomy, The Terminology of Health and Medicine, Medications and Mathematics for the Nurse, and SpellRight. Ms. Rice’s commitment to health education has earned her several awards, including the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL), Georgia State Department of Technical and Adult Education Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, and Georgia Vocational Association’s Health Occupations Educator of the Year.
  • Standards Openers: Chapter-opening discussions of professional standards set by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHP) and the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) familiarize readers with important content and prepare them for certification.
  • Extra Math: Additional practice problems on the Metric System and calculating adult drug dosages build familiarity with everyday math computations and modern drug labels. Answers to practice problems can be found in the Instructor’s Manual.
  • Kid’s Calculations: New practice problems, review problems, and self-assessment problems in Unit 6 help readers better calculate drug dosages for children and understand how they differ from adult calculations. Answers to practice problems can be found in the Instructor’s Manual.
  • Updated Overview: A history of drugs from the sixteenth century to the present, as well as details on pharmacology subdivisions, drug schedules, registration, record keeping, security, and dosages gives readers a broad perspective of pharmacology in modern health care.
  • Drug Tracking: A detailed review of ingestible event markers shows students how this drug delivery system records time-stamped, patient logged events, and includes examples cross-checked for accuracy at [email protected].
  • Medication Matters: New content on medication orders follows the journey of an electronic prescription, or e-script, as well as the inner workings of compounding pharmacies.
  • Critical Terms: Must-know terms at the beginning of every chapter include definitions and phonetic pronunciations that help readers build a medical vocabulary and communicate effectively with peers in professional settings.
