  • An exciting new feature, "Timeless Links," has replaced the previous timelines as the introduction to all historical chapters. “Timeless Links” explore the themes that have inspired artists for centuries and create links across space and time. These links open connections between the artists and art of different periods and cultures throughout the book.
  • More than 30 diverse and contemporary artists have been added to this edition, with many new works by women, including Petah Coyne, Ana Mendieta, Janine Antoni, Nina Paley, June Wayne, Betsabeé Romero and Rei Kawakubo. Among the many international artists added are Gabriel Orozco, Laila Essaydi, Jun-Nguyen Hatsushiba, Yinka Shonibare, Ai Weiwei, Zaha Hadid, and El Anatsui.
  • New "Art News" boxes include "The Mud Angels (of the 1966 Florence flood)" and "British Bad Boys: Hirst and Banksy."
  • Entertaining and illuminating for students, "Art News" boxes discuss real events that often rocked the world, such as the theft of the Mona Lisa. New boxes include "The Mud Angels (of the 1966 Florence flood)" and "British Bad Boys: Hirst and Banksy."
  • "A Global View" boxes expose students to art and culture from around the world. They demonstrate the diversity and complexity of myriad cultures across the globe and are integrated throughout the text--rather than isolated in a separate chapter--to provide students with a better worldview.
  • "Art Issues" boxes discuss important current concerns and controversies facing the art world. Topics include "Pilgrimages for a New Age"-- detailing travel to hard-to-reach earthwork sites--and "What's the Difference Between a Print and a Poster?"
