Overview

Choose the book written for the way you teach! McKeague and Turner’s bestselling TRIGONOMETRY combines the standard right-angle approach with detailed examples and high-interest applications in a cohesive package.

Charles P. McKeague

Charles P. "Pat" McKeague earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge, and his M.S. in Mathematics from Brigham Young University. A well-known author and respected educator, he is a full-time writer and a part-time instructor at Cuesta College. He has published twelve textbooks in mathematics covering a range of topics from basic mathematics to trigonometry. An active member of the mathematics community, Professor McKeague is a popular speaker at regional conferences, including the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Texas Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, the New Mexico Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the National Association for Developmental Education. He is a member of the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges, the Mathematics Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges.

Mark Turner

Mark D. Turner earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton. Professor Turner worked in the aerospace industry for two years with the Systems Modeling and Analysis group at The Aerospace Corporation before completing his graduate work at California Polytechnic State University, where he earned his M.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Teaching Credential. Turner is a full-time instructor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. He has been a leading influence in the use of graphing calculator and multimedia technology in the classroom, as well as a leading innovator in instructional website design at his institution. Mark has also created educational materials through his own company, Turner Educational Publishing, including a series of Web-based tutorials on the use of the TI-83 graphing calculator. He is a member of the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges and the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, and is a frequent speaker at annual conferences. Professor Turner has received the CMC3 Award for Teaching Excellence.
  • New Appendix Sections: Two new sections in the appendixprovide a substantial review of algebra and geometry. The content of these appendix sections focuses on the specific concepts and skills students will see or need at various points throughout the text. Together with the sections on functions and inverse functions, the appendix provides a review that can be tailored to your particular students’ needs. The material can be covered in class, assigned as homework, or used as a self-study for only those students who need it.
  • New Examples: New examples have been added to every chapter to help students gain a better understanding of certain concepts.
  • New Exercises: New exercises and Extending the Concepts problems have been added in some sections to help students gain a better grasp of key concepts, to help motivate students and stimulate their interest in trigonometry, and to provide a challenge for more advanced students.
  • WEBASSIGN: TRIGONOMETRY, Eighth Edition, is the powerful online homework and course management system that engages students in learning the math. WebAssign includes new end-of-chapter exercises, animated simulations, and pre-built assignments vetted by trusted subject matter experts along with robust course, section, assignment, and question settings and online testing to help instructors foster a deeper understanding of course concepts.
  • Historical Vignettes intrigue students by providing background on the ways in which many of the central ideas in trigonometry originated.
  • Each section begins with a list of student learning objectives that describe the specific, measurable knowledge and skills that students are expected to achieve. For instructors, learning objectives can help in organizing class lessons and learning activities and in creating student assessments.
  • Multiple choice questions appear at the end of every problem set, and are designed to be used in or outside of class to assess student learning. Each question directly corresponds to one of the student learning objectives for that section. Answers to these questions are not available to students, but are provided for instructors in the Annotated Instructor’s Edition and Instructor’s Solutions Manual. These problems can be especially useful for schools and institutions required to provide documentation and data relating to assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Group Projects at the end of each chapter involve interesting problems or applications that relate to or extend the ideas introduced within the chapter. Projects emphasize how mathematics connect with other disciplines or illustrate real-life situations that use the principles of trigonometry. You can use projects with small student groups or assign them to individual students who need additional challenges.
  • Research Projects at the end of each chapter require students to investigate an historical topic or person that is connected to the chapter's material. These projects promote an appreciation for the rich history behind trigonometry.
  • Three cumulative tests are included in the book to help students review previous learning and improve retention. These are similar to the chapter tests, except that the questions pertain to all of the sections in the book up to that point. Answers to both odd and even problems for cumulative tests are given in the back of the book.
  • Captivating themes throughout the text highlight trigonometry concepts in action with illustrations such as the human cannonball, the Ferris wheel, sports, and navigation systems. These intriguing themes, clearly marked with icons in the examples and problem sets, help students correlate one lesson with another throughout the course.
