Valerie Hansen

Valerie Hansen received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. She is Stanley Woodward Professor of History at Yale University, where she teaches courses on East Asian history, especially pre-modern China and Silk Road history. Her most recent books include THE OPEN EMPIRE: A HISTORY OF CHINA TO 1600, THE SILK ROAD: A NEW HISTORY WITH DOCUMENTS and THE YEAR 1000: WHEN EXPLORERS CONNECTED THE WORLD AND GLOBALIZATION BEGAN. As co-author of VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, Dr. Hansen has written this edition's Chapters 1–15.

Ken Curtis

Kenneth R. Curtis received his Ph.D. in African and comparative world history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on colonial to postcolonial transitions in East Africa, with a particular focus on the coffee economy of Tanzania. He is a professor of history and liberal studies at California State University, Long Beach. He teaches world history at the introductory level, in special courses designed for future middle and high school teachers and in graduate seminars. He has worked to advance the teaching of world history at the collegiate and secondary levels in collaboration with the World History Association, the California History/Social Science Project and the College Board's Advanced Placement World History course.

Brief “Context & Connections“ inserts integrated into the chapter narrative help students understand the global nature of world history by illustrating similar and different patterns across societies and periods. These inserts -- highlighted in color with their chapter reference to help emphasize recurring themes and ideas and connect concepts to other chapters -- can also jump-start discussions that bring in other comparisons. The inserts complement, but are distinct from, the end-of-chapter “Context and Connections“ essays.
“Complex Societies and the Discipline of History,“ a new section at the start of Chapter 2, introduces students to historical method and the nature of sources.
New travelers in Volume 1 include China‘s Grand Historian Sima Qian, who lived during the Han dynasty; and Spanish pilgrim Egeria, who from 381 to 384 traveled from the Roman empire‘s western edge to Jerusalem, Egypt, and Constantinople. New travelers in Volume 2 include Rammohun Roy, a prominent Indian reformer and figure in the Bengal Renaissance; and anarchist Emma Goldman, who brings an in-depth look at a radical view of women‘s issues in the early 20th century.
New and revised “Visual Evidence in Primary Sources“ and “Movement of Ideas Through Primary Sources“ features freshen the content in several chapters. These features teach analytical skills and promote critical thinking by inviting students to compare viewpoints.
New material on women includes a new section on the changing lives of women in China‘s commercial revolution (Volume 1), and greater emphasis on women‘s leadership in the survey of contemporary affairs (Volume 2).

Complemented by new inserts within the chapter narrative, the end-of-chapter “Context and Connections“ include essays and timelines that will help students see the big picture in global terms.
“Movement of Ideas Through Primary Sources“ and “Visual Evidence in Primary Sources“ features teach students how to analyze historical evidence in textual and visual sources. “World History in Today‘s World“ essays show students how historical developments relate to current issues.
Student-friendly pedagogical features include chapter outlines, focus questions, bolded key terms, an on-page glossary, and pronunciation guides.
