Writing and Reporting News: A Coaching Method 8th Edition by Carole Rich

Overview

Packed with bright new images and examples from recent headlines, WRITING AND REPORTING NEWS: A COACHING METHOD, 8e uses tips and techniques from revered writing coaches and award-winning journalists to help students develop the writing and reporting skills they need to succeed in a changing world of journalism. Delivering solid coverage of the fundamental skills, the text integrates new trends in the convergence of print, broadcast, and online media. It devotes an entire chapter to media ethics, while ethical dilemmas in each chapter give students practice working through ethical issues before they face them on the job. Offering the most up-to-date coverage available, the Eighth Edition fully integrates multimedia content into the chapters-reflecting the way the news world actually operates. An all-new book glossary features many of the newer terms used in Journalism. In addition, the book now offers MindTap Communication, a fully online, highly personalized learning experience that enhances learner engagement and improves outcomes while reducing instructor workload.

Carole Rich

Carole Rich is a retired journalism professor, formerly at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she was the Atwood professor before accepting a full-time position. She also served as chair of the journalism department at Hofstra University in New York for two years, taught journalism at the University of Kansas for 11 years, and worked for 16 years in the newspaper industry. She was a reporter for the former PHILADELPHIA EVENING BULLETIN, city editor of the SUN-SENTINEL in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and deputy metropolitan editor of the HARTFORD COURANT in Connecticut. In addition to serving as a visiting writing coach at newspapers throughout the United States, Professor Rich has conducted many writing seminars for journalism organizations, including a group of professional journalists in Spain. She is the author of multiple highly regarded media and reporting textbooks.
  • More engaging than ever, each chapter has been fully refreshed with bright new images and examples from recent headlines.
  • The text emphasizes real-world news coverage throughout. For example, Chapter 21: Disasters, Weather and Tragedies teaches students how to carefully report about tragedy as it examines real-life events like the Boston Marathon Bombing and the Sandy Hook School Shooting.
  • To enhance student learning and comprehension, the author developed an all-new book glossary. Featuring many of the newer terms now used in Journalism-like “microblogging”-this glossary helps increases your students' industry vocabulary.
  • Each chapter features new information, examples, and exercises that keep students up to date with the latest issues, trends and techniques in journalism while also giving them hands-on experience putting chapter concepts into practice.
  • Multimedia and Social Media boxes in every chapter help students develop the skills and know-how needed to excel in the increasingly media-rich environment.
  • In addition to an entire chapter devoted to media ethics, every chapter includes highlighted boxes of ethical dilemmas to teach students the importance of critical thinking about ethical issues and to help them explore some of the dilemmas they might face as media professionals.
  • A proven approach to training in the journalism profession, the text's unique coaching method helps students improve their writing and reporting skills through tips and techniques from revered writing coaches and award-winning journalists.
  • Dedicated chapters on web journalism, English grammar and usage, and multicultural sensitivity provide in-depth coverage of key topics such as communicating effectively via the Internet and the mechanics of writing, as well as considerations of personal bias and how it can impact journalistic objectivity.
  • An abbreviated AP style guide at the end of the book serves as a quick reference for common problems and uses, giving students practice with this indispensable reference used widely by professional journalists.
  • Every chapter includes boxed multimedia reporting and writing tips to prepare students for careers that require a combination of skills and integrate print, broadcast and online media. A special opening chapter introduces students to this rapidly changing world of converging media and begins the discussion of the growing problem of plagiarism and fabrication in journalism.
