At Cengage we also offer customised print and digital solutions shaped from the content within our extensive library of texts and collections. Custom publishing allows you to pick and choose content from one or more Cengage titles and combine it into a definitive course text, including your own material if required so that you can create a complete and efficient resource.

You can:

  • Take out the extra material you do not cover in class, ensuring that your students only pay for the content that they need.
  • Replace chapters with coverage that better matches your approach. Our Learning Consultants are always on hand to help map content to your course.
  • Supplement the text with additional readings, cases, or exercises. They can be used to create an affordable course supplement or integrated into your core textbook.
  • Include your own course material. Help your students keep reference materials all in one place by binding them with your text. Popular examples include course syllabi, maps, lecturer notes, PowerPoint slides and sample exams.
  • Choose to create a print book, eBook or both. Having these options available gives you the freedom to create a product in the style and format most effective for your students. If you choose the print option, be assured that all our custom textbooks are professionally produced and bound to the same high professional standard as a normal text.
  • Design your own cover and add your university branding and course information for a truly personalized textbook.

  • Cengage take on all costs and responsibility for printing and sell through. We will print for 100% of student enrolment on the course. We do not expect every book or eBook to sell. All we ask is that you actively recommend that students purchase the textbook or eBook for their studies.

Before we create the proofs for your customised text, you will be sent a quote which will detail what’s required in the custom book such as component titles and their chapters, prepress options and price. We require written confirmation that we have understood your requirements and that you are to use the text in your forthcoming course. This is not a legal contract. 

It very much depends on what your text is made up of, whether you choose to print in colour, and how much additional work is done – e.g. repagination and re-indexing. We will discuss all options available to you before confirming the price.

It’s up to you! For printed custom books,  you can choose:

  • full colour
  • two colour
  • black/white printing.

Comparative prices can be given if requested. Custom eBooks will always be produced in the original colour scheme of the source texts.

Yes. You can choose to keep the original page numbers and index or have the text fully repaginated and with a bespoke index. It’s your choice!

You can include:

  • whole chapters from any Cengage text, and combine material from as many Cengage texts as you like – there is no limit to how many books you choose content from.
  • content from one of our databases, such as Harvard Business School cases.
  • your own materials, assuming you are responsible for the copyright.  Popular examples include lecture notes, workshop or tutorial materials, academic calendar, reading lists, campus map and course syllabus.

The minimum number of students for a custom text is 50. For eBooks we can look at smaller class sizes on a case-by-case basis.

Once you have decided what you want your text to consist of, we can usually have printed copies published within 8-12 weeks. eBooks will take much less time. Your Cengage Representative will be able to advise further on the delivery schedule once the details of the custom text have been agreed.

For printed books and eBooks, students will be able to purchase the material from your local bookshop or through our website. For direct sales, custom eBooks can be delivered to a VLE such as Blackboard or Moodle, or delivered as a list of codes for distribution to the students.

Yes. You have the option to choose from our gallery of covers or you can create your own unique cover specifically for your course and institution. Your institutional logo can be added to the cover too!
